You’ve probably heard about laughing gas and may have a vague idea that it can be used at the dentist in order to make you more comfortable during a filling or other procedure. However, there is a lot more to learn about this sedation option. Find out how laughing gas can be used to improve your next dental experience.
WHAT DOES LAUGHING GAS DO?
Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is a type of minimal sedation that can be offered during surgery, drilling, or other dental procedures. It may also be offered to patients with a high level of dental anxiety. It is usually administered over the nose, and it can make you feel calmer with less situational awareness. However, you’ll still be awake and can respond to instructions given by your dentist.
The laughing gas will be administered via a mask, and once you put it on, you’ll inhale a mix of oxygen and nitrous oxide. You’ll quickly feel sleepy and relaxed, and although the effects will wear off quite fast, you may need to stay in the office until you feel like normal. You should also plan to have a chaperone drive you home after your appointment.
HOW SAFE IS LAUGHING GAS?
Laughing gas is non-irritating, and it is considered to be one of the safest drugs used in dental care. Pregnant women and children can also use it without worry about complications. In fact, administering laughing gas can actually reduce the risk of certain procedures, especially with people who gag easily. However, some people should avoid the use of laughing gas, including patients who suffer from lung conditions like emphysema and individuals with schizophrenia.
