When to Go to the ER for a Dental Emergency

Posted on 1/25/2017 by Richard Morales
A red sign with white letters on it saying emergency.
Not all problems with your teeth garner a visit to the emergency room, however, some of them do. If you are in excruciating pain, bleeding and you cannot get the bleeding to stop, or if you knocked out a tooth and you are unable to reach your dentist, you should head to your nearest ER or acute care center.

They may not be able to do much, but they may be able to put you in touch with a dentist that is currently open for emergency cases, which is better than not tending to the issue.

Some Cases Where a Visit to the ER Is Warranted

When you undergo some type of a facial injury and there is a puncture or heavy bleeding involved, the first thing you need to do is to try and stop the bleeding. Once you have it controlled or stopped, call your dentist. If they cannot see you, they should be able to tell you if you need to go in. If you cannot get the bleeding controlled, get help getting to the ER - don't wait.

If you knock out a tooth, or knock one loose, you should also call on your dentist immediately. When your dentist is not open or cannot see your immediately, you need to go in to the ER. The only way to save a tooth that has been knocked out is to tend to it right away. Otherwise, the tooth will die and there will be nothing that anyone can do.

When you are experiencing pain, bleeding, or a problem that seems urgent to you, trust your gut. Contact our office and talk with them about coming in. If they cannot see you, go to your ER and let them help. It could be what saves your healthy smile.
